Oct. 22: Marvelous, a Musical Opera and the Oz Problem

Composer Gregory Hall, author of the American Prize-finalist opera “Marvelous,” will give a performance / lecture on his sequel to the Wizard of Oz in advance of its premiere next year in Aberdeen, South Dakota—the birthplace of Oz.

Gregory will also discuss the “Oz Problem” at the heart of his work: how he addresses it in Marvelous, and how it has likely held back L. Frank Baum‘s Oz sequel books from a wider audience.

May 7: An Afternoon of French-Canadian Music

The first event in the 2023 Sid Emery Memorial Speakers’ Series takes place on Sunday, May 7 at 2:30 PM at the Sanford-Springvale Historical Museum. “An Afternoon of French-Canadian Music” features fiddler Don Roy and keyboardist Cindy LaBrecque. Events in the Sid Emery Speakers’ Series are sponsored by the Sanford-Springvale Historical Society and the Friends of the Alfred Shaker Museum.

Tickets are $15 for persons 18 of age and older, and children are admitted free of charge. Seating is limited to 100, so reservations are recommended. To reserve your tickets, contact Harland Eastman or Lloyd Hunt.

The Sanford-Springvale Historical Museum is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible.

Speakers’ Series: Change of Venue

Both of the remaining Speakers’ Series events for this season have had a change of venue. They were scheduled to be held in Denis Hall, but will be held instead at the Alfred Shaker Museum. They will take place at the scheduled times.

Speakers’ Series: Sheryl Faye as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, October 16

Actress Sheryl Faye of Amesbury portrays Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in her one-woman show. A specialist in bringing historical figures to life, Faye’s many other characters include Helen Keller, Abigail Adams and Susan B. Anthony.

Our next Speakers’ Series event takes place on Sunday, October 16, at 1:30 PM at the Museum.

Actress Sheryl Faye, who presented as the famous Helen Keller a few years ago, will introduce us to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Faye has a whole repertoire of interpretations of famous women in American history.

Sept. 11 Speakers’ Series Event Canceled

Unfortunately, our September 11 Speakers’ Series event with Hilary Zayed has been canceled.

August 14 Speaker Series: Historian Bob Greene

This Sunday, August 14 at 2 PM, Bob Greene will discuss Black history in Maine.

Retired journalist and award-winning historian Bob Greene will describe Maine’s Black history, which began in the state’s long-ago story. His own family history extends back eight generations, to Maine in the 1700s.

He was born in Portland and, after college, became a newsman. For years, he covered both natural disasters and sports.

Later, in Maine again as a retiree, he dug deeply into his own background in Cumberland County, which led him to genealogical research and Black history. He now teaches a course on it at the University of Southern Maine’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Sunday, May 22 — Speaker’s Series Event Canceled

Alfred Shaker Museum’s planned guest speaker event for Sunday, May 22 with author, artist and accident victim Hilary Zayed has been canceled. This event in the Sid Emery Memorial Forum Speakers’ series has been rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2 PM. We hope to see you there then.

News from the Museum

Alfred Shaker Museum has an exciting season ahead with many of our past programs back on the schedule. As in past years, the museum will be open on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from 1:00-4:00 PM.

Events will start with our Opening Day on May 7. Opening day plans include presenting our student essay contest prize after the winner reads the essay that won. Some treats will later be offered.

Our Emery Memorial Forum will launch this year on Sunday, May 22, when Hillary Zayed describes her long road to recovery after a horseback riding accident. Zayed has many surprising insights into her experience.

There will be a Simple Gifts Music Festival in July. The date is TBD.
